A Boy Who Liked Color Michael self published the First Edition of A Boy Who Liked Color in 2000. The children's picture book, which has large type and simple words is filled with original drawings and colorful illustrations showing how Michael learned how to draw and paint. It teaches simple color mixing and how to draw with shapes (the way Michael learned.) It is Michael's gift to all of the little children who love to color and are just learning how to read. The last page says "You can be an artist too." Books ordered in 2008 include a brand new sheet for parents with specific information about things families can do to help their children develop artistically, from babyhood to the teen years. The books are $25 each, shipping included. Please make checks or money orders payable to Michael Johnson and send them to P.O. Box 6157, Evanston, IL 60204-6157. Each book is signed by Michael Johnson. Michael writes a personal illustrated letter (using archival materials) to each child who receives this special book.

In 2007 Michael wrote the Second Edition of "A Boy Who Liked Color". It is longer and has many new illustrations. Like Michael's illustrated letter, it shows how to mix colors and draw dogs, cats, horses, giraffes and elephants with shapes. The Second Edition also shows how to paint a portrait, step by step. In the Afterword Carrie Desai wrote what it is like to be a person with Down syndrome and her husband Sujeet wrote about being a musician. The Second Edition is not available yet. It takes time for publishers to get books in print.
